Solute transport in heterogeneous model porous media under different flow rates: Experimental and modelling study

چکیده
The present paper focuses on solute transport behaviour in a Model Heterogeneous Porous Medium (MHPM) under different flow rates. We report tracer experiments stationary hydraulic conditions, with 7 rates spanning two orders of magnitude. Several replicates are carried out several MHPMs, allowing for sound statistical assessment experimental imprecision. BreakThrough Curves (BTCs) exhibit dual mode agreement previously-reported field scale experiments. This is shown to be flow-rate independent suitable variable change, the BTCs superposing limit uncertainty. experiment modelled using classical Multi-Region Advection-Dispersion (MRAD) model only mobile regions. rate reformulation MRAD that allows both water and continuity preserved during calibration process. Assuming linear dependence dispersion exchange coefficients yield satisfactory behaviour. confirms linearity coefficient respect rate, often suggested literature, over wide range conditions.

Modelling flow and solute transport in fractured porous media
A BEM numerical model is presented for the flow and solute transport in fractured porous media, which is based on the dual reciprocity method multi domain scheme (DRM-MD). The model solves the 3D flow equation based on the Darcy law in the coupled system of porous media, fracture network and fracture intersections. Unlike the discrete fracture models, which for simplicity use Fick's law in the ...
متن کاملSolute Transport in Heterogeneous Porous Media
Solute mass transport in porous media is strongly correlated with pore fluid flow. The analysis of solute transport is an effective means for studying medium heterogeneities. In this study, we discuss the effects of heterogeneity on the tracer transport. Assuming steady fluid flow, we have simulated tracer transport in various permeability heterogeneities. The results show that the tracer distr...
متن کاملEffective Macrodiffusion in Solute Transport through Heterogeneous Porous Media
Homogenization method is used to analyse the equivalent behavior of transient flow of a passive solute through highly heterogeneous porous media. The flow is governed by a coupled system which includes an elliptic equation and a linear convection-diffusion concentration equation with a diffusion term small with respect to the convection, i.e. a high Peclet number is considered. Asymptotic expan...
متن کاملSolute transport during cyclic flow in saturated porous media
We consider materials with large pores interconnected by thin long channels saturated with an incompressible fluid. In the absence of fluid flow, solute transport in the porous network is diffusion controlled, however, solute transport can be enhanced when the porous network is subjected to a cyclic flow with zero time average velocity. We develop a mathematical model to analyze this physical p...
متن کاملSimulating Solute Transport in Porous Media Using Model Reduction Techniques
In this study, we introduce a numerical method to reduce the solute transport equation into a reduced form that can replicate the behavior of the model described by the original equation. The basic idea is to collect an ensemble of data of state variables (say, solute concentration), called snapshots, by running the original model, and then use the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) techniqu...
